10th Annual May Day Living History and Artisan Faire

The 10th Annual May Day Living History and Artisan Faire is happening

Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine,

at Blue Ox Historic Park, located on the corner of 1st and X Streets in Eureka, on the bay.

Adults pay $8 ($7 with a nonperishable donation toward the Food Bank), Kids 12 and under are free.

This family friendly event, filled with fun for all ages, is a benefit fundraiser for “Blue Ox Youth and Community Radio, a DreamMaker Program of the Ink People Center for the Arts.  Blue Ox Youth and Community Radio is a non-profit 100 watt radio station broadcasting at 97.7 FM and is dedicated to giving the young people of the Humboldt Bay region their own voice on the airwaves.  This year, funds raised will go toward Blue Ox Radios efforts to stream on the internet, thus helping us reach a wider audience both locally and abroad.

Skilled artisans will demonstrate blacksmithing, woodworking, weaving, spinning, beading, looming, silk painting, lapidary, ceramics, flint making, bookbinding, and much more.  Attendants can watch spinners spin thread from wool and cotton; watch blacksmiths pound iron into fancy shapes; learn about heirloom seeds and how to grow and store them; glaze a ceramic tile; and sing sea chanteys with the “boat crew.”

The Compost Mountain Boys, Pilot Rock Ramblers, The Tumbleweeds, and Striped Pig Stringband, along with The Trickle Downs, Mirth First, Joe Garceau, Lindsay Battle, Jan Bramlett, & Calleaghn Kinnamon, and more will keep everyone dancing with old-timey and bluegrass music on two stages all day long.

Guests are invited to share in some local Microbrews in the beer garden and enjoy delicious barbeque and other tasty goodies in the historic Blue Ox cookshack.  A May Pole will be available for fun and games, as well as puppet shows throughout the day, face painting and games by Too Funny Rainbow Creations, and local balloon artist Matthew Scott. Hand made items crafted by students of the Blue Ox Community School will be available for purchase in the student gift store.

The 10th Annual May Day Living History and Artisans Faire takes place during the “First Ever” Humboldt Living History Day along with Fort Humboldt State Historical Park, Clark Historical Museum, The Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum, Madaket Cruises, The Headwater Forest Reserve, and The Samoa Cookhouse.   For more information, visit them on the web at http://redwoods.info/showrecord.asp?id=4852.
